The GOAL Trial

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for Frail Older People with Chronic Kidney Disease

Doctors and researchers in the GOAL trial are studying how to improve the health and wellbeing of older frail people with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

An increasing number of older people are living with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Many have complex healthcare needs and are at risk of deteriorating health and functional status, which can adversely affect their quality of life.

The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) helps older people live longer and more independently. However, we don’t yet know how useful or cost-effective it is for frail older people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

About the trial

The GOAL trial is aiming to find if a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) can help patients improve their health and wellbeing and achieve their goals.

When enrolling in the GOAL study, all participants are required to establish objectives that hold personal significance. These objectives will undergo periodic reviews at the 3, 6, and 12-month marks. Additionally, participants are expected to fill out a brief health survey and undergo a frailty status evaluation during the four scheduled study visits over the course of a year.

The GOAL trial was designed to include 500 participants from 16 hospitals across Australia. Participants from half of these sites undergo a review by a geriatrician, while those from the remaining sites receive their usual care.

The GOAL Trial is facilitated by the Australasian Kidney Trials Network
